OCs Likens starring for Rampage hockey

Ohio County High school senior Kody Likens had a solid senior season for the OCHS football Eagles, finishing second in rushing and ranking among the area's leaders in tackles. But the 5-4, 140-pounder was also pulling double-duty as a forward on the Owensboro Rampage high school ice hockey team.

The Rampage is a member of the Kentucky High School Hockey League which calls the Owensboro Ice Arena its home. Owensboro is one often teams in the league, and the only squad outside the Louisville/Lexington area. The Rampage are currently 4-3 on the season, good enough to tie for fourth in the state league. The KHSHL season starts in October and lasts through the state championship match in early March. Ice hockey is not yet a sport sanctioned by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, and thus is considered a "club" sport administered by the KHSHL.

Defending state champs Oldham County lead the '09-' 10 KHSHL standings at 6-0, followed by Louisville St.Xavier (5-1), Louisville Eastern (5-2), Owensboro and Lexington Henry Clay (4-3), Lexington Lafayette Generals and Lexington Catholic (3-4), Louisville Trinity (1-5), Lexington Paul Laurence Dunbar (1-6), and Louisville Fern Creek (0-4). The Rampage's last game resulted in a 9-1 win over Dunbar.

Coached by Dave Winkle-pleck, who is assisted by Murray Adams and Greg Sexton and goalie coach Aaron Mc-Fadden, the Rampage include players from Apollo, Owensboro Catholic, Daviess County High, Owensboro High, Bowling Green High, Bowling Green Greenwood High Schools. One of Likens'teammates is former Ohio County resident Joseph Wiggins, who now attends Daviess County High.

Likens has scored three goals in the Rampage's first seven matches along with one assist while Wiggins has three goals and five assists.

Oldham County went 17-1 last season while Owensboro finished last in the regular-season with a mark of 1-15.
