Karla Effland, RN, White City, USD 481, is a recipient of a $983.35 Healthy Habits for Life grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation. Mrs. Effland is one of 57 school nurses or program administrators from across the state who received grants to promote healthy lifestyle choices to their school-aged children. The foundation donated $53,371.42 through Healthy Habits for Life, boosting the four-year total of the grant program to more than $162,000.

"This year's grant recipients, including Karla, did a great job in developing healthy activities and educational programs that will impact a large number of students while also being cost-effective," said Marlou Wegener, chief operating officer of the Foundation. "One of the far-reaching benefits of these grants is that the programs often reach beyond the classroom, touching families and communities. Guided by our school nurses, we must work together to help our school-age children reduce their cardiovascular risk, increase physical activity or learn healthy eating habits."

The renewal of the grant program was announced July 2009 in Wichita during the 20th Annual Statewide Conference of the Kansas School Nurse Organization (KSNO). The amount of each grant was based on the applicant's request for the program he or she proposed, up to a maximum of $ 1,000. The tax-exempt school district or private school must be located in the service area of the BCBSKS Foundation (all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte).

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas are independent licensees of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. BCBSKS is the state's largest health insurer, serving all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte.

Karla was instrumental in forming a health council for the White City school and continues to work with the council on a variety of projects to promote healthy lifestyles for the students and staff.
