Dr. Nanda Kumar certified in Sleep Medicine subspecialty

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) is pleased to announce that Dr. Nanda Kumar is now certified in the subspecialty of Sleep Medicine for the next ten years. Dr. Kumar is a neurologist and medical director of the Fred C. Bramlage Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Geary Community Hospital.

Sleep Medicine is a subspecialization that focuses on the diagnosis and management of sleep-related clinical conditions, including circadian rhythm disorders. This subspecialty includes the clinical assessment, polysomnographic evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including insomnias, disorders of excessive sleepiness (e.g. narcolepsy), sleep related breathing disorders (such as obstructive sleep apnea), parasomnias, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep related movement disorders and other conditions pertaining to the sleep-wake cycle.

To achieve certification in sleep medicine, candidates from the ABPN must hold a valid certificate in psychiatry, neurology, or neurology with special qualification in child neurology. They must also fulfill all of the following requirements: Satisfactory documentation of practice experience; participation in training requirements in the year of the examination; licensure in the ABPN's, successful completion of the certification examination by the board; and be certified by the board in neurology, or child neurology by February 1 prior to the examination administration.
