Gloria Ann Riffel

Gloria Ann Riffel 79, former Hope resident, died Saturday, June, 19, 2010, at the home of her daughter in Sawyer, Kansas. She was born December 19, 1930 in Carlton, Kansas the daughter of Jacob Henry and Valene Elizabeth (James) Rutz. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, attended the local schools and graduated from Hope High School with the class of 1948.

On August 26, 1948 she was united in marriage with Percy Wilbert Riffel. They made their home in Hope, Kansas. She was a homemaker and worked at the Hope Cafe for over 27 years. She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek, rural Herington, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mr, Riffel preceded her in death on June 13, 1999.

Surviving are one daughter, Marlene Boyd of Sawyer, Kansas; three sons, Tracy Dean Riffel of Hope, David Eugene Riffel of Wichita and John Henry Riffel of White City; brothers, Willis Lee Rutz of Enterprise, James Robert Rutz of Goodland and Ray Allen Rutz of Channelview', Texas; sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Jean Riffel of Herington, Carol Sue Stromgren of Abilene, Joyce Marie Gaston of Abilene and Shirley Mae Pennington of New Castle, Indiana; 5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 5 step-great grandchildren, special friend in Jan Carr of Salina and other relatives.

Besides her husband Percy, she was preceded in death by two sons, Roger Lee Riffel in 1966 and Robert Lynn Riffel in 1997; her parents; a brother, Wayne Francis Rutz and a sister, Katherine Louise Holdridge.

Funeral services will be held at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek on Friday, June 25, 2010 at 10:30 AM with Rev. John Riebhoff officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, Hope, Kansas, Thursday evening from 7-8 PM where friends may call until time of service.

The family of Gloria Ann Riffel suggests that friends may contribute to Hospice Care of Kansas, or the American Diabetes Association in her memory. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
