MANHATTAN, Kan. -Stephanie Laudemann, Joni Peterson and Kimberly Stilwell, teachers at White City Schools, recently learned how to integrate agriculture into their classrooms. The teachers completed the course "Connecting Your Classroom to Kansas Agriculture, " sponsored by Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom. The course was designed to provide attendees with a broad understanding of the state's number one industry. Kansas State University hosted the course June 7-11.

"With one in five students going into a career related to agriculture, the Foundation believes it is important to expose teachers to the possibilities by helping them discover agriculture and its exciting outreach, " said Cathy Musick, KFAC executive director.

Using a hands-on approach to teach agriculture, the teachers experienced what some have neyer imagined. Agricultural professionals gave them the opportunity to experience agriculture first hand. "I have gained a wealth of knowledge about the ways I can incorporate agriculture in the many areas I teach, " said Laudemann.

"Although I come from a background of farming and ranching, I now see the bigger picture of agriculture from production to processing and to the plate, " added Stilwell.

The teachers received full-tuition scholarships to attend the course. Each teacher received scholarship money from Morris County Farm Bureau and Midwest Dairy Association. Laudemann's remaining tuition fees were covered by Kansas Dairy Commission, Peterson's remaining tuition fees were covered by Kansas Farm Bureau and ICM, Inc., and Stilwell's remaining tuition fees were covered by "Miami County Conservation District.

Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. KFAC was founded in 1982 as part of a nationwide initiative to help students gain a greater awareness of the role of agriculture in the economy and society, so that they may become citizens who support wise agricultural policies.
