Dear Editor,

I just had the opportunity to witness up front and close the most amazing example of competition and good sportsmanship I have seen in over 20 years. As an umpire, I get a look that is upfront and closer than any other view in the park.

Saturday night I had the privilege to umpire the championship game for the Ash-Morrison Scholarship Coed Softball Tournament. Even though the score wasn't that close (14 to 5) the competitive effort and the sportsmanship were a virtual tie. I was humbled to be a part of the display of competition, sportsmanship and fun that exuded from the "Hot Wangs and Sweet Thangs " and the "One Hit Wonders". They didn't gripe and complain at every opportunity as has been so prevalent in the past championship games, and a good time was had by all.

I have been umpiring for over 20 years and I can truthfully say I have never had such a good time umpiring. I guess that is because so many of the players were young ladies and gentlemen that I had taught and coached here in White City Schools. I was proud of all of you and your efforts and I would like to thank you for an enjoyable evening. I would list all your names, but then I would forget someone and feel bad. So, if you know Captain Blood, he says "Salute to you all."

PS. Ryan Nittler..".. Keep your chin up. It was an awesome tournament and winning isn't always everything. You are a class guy and everybody knows that. (Oh yeah, Funky and Skip congratulations.)

Coach Ash
