Velva L. Blanton

Velva L. Blanton, 90, Council Grove, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2010, at Morris County Hospital.

She was born November 5, 1919, to Otis L. and Anna Maud (Wiggins) Burnett in Council Grove. She graduated with the Class of 1938 from Alta Vista High School.

Velva married Junior Blanton on March 25, 1946, in Council Grove.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church; a member of the Morris County Senior Citizen's Board; past president of Dunlap United Methodist Women; and was very active in the local 4-H clubs and the several churches that she belonged to during her life.

Velva was a homemaker and partner with her husband with their farming profession. She graduated with the Class of 1938 from Alta Vista High School and attended Emporia State University. She taught school for eight years. She was one solo flight away from her pilot's license to become ^ WASP (Women's Air Support Pilot) during World War II. She enjoyed making quilts for family, friends, and newborns in local hospitals. Velva was known for her random acts of kindness for those in need. She was very active in the local 4-H clubs and the several churches that she belonged to during her life.

She is survived by her sons, Joe Blanton, Strongsville, Ohio, and Jim Blanton and wife Mi-chele, Manhattan; daughters, Sue Pio and husband Rex, Edgerton, and Helen Fowble and husband Gary, Cardington, Ohio; brother, Leland Burnett, Overland Park; grandchildren, Julie and Tom Frank, Jason and Lisa Pio and Jeff and Kelsi Pio; and a great-granddaughter, Rachel Pio.

Velva was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Junior Blanton; grandson, Scott Pio; three brothers, Chester Burnett, Otis Burnett, Jr., and Ross Burnett; and three sisters, Wilma Metcalf, Mildred Schoof and Fern Simmons.

Funeral services for Velva were held Tuesday, August 31, at Penwell-Gabel Flint Hills Chapel, with Pastor Harold Brown officiating. Interment followed at Dunlap Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Council Grove Senior Center or Morris County 4-H Foundation and may be mailed to Penwell-Gabel, Box 273, Council Grove K.S.
