Harriett Ridenour

Harriett Augustine Ridenour. 92, Council Grove, Kansas, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010 al Morris County Hospital.

She was born February 7, 1918, at Morrisville, Missouri, to Opal Edith and Henry Elrod Wicker. During 1921 she resided in Council Grove. While growing up Harriett lived in Cedar Vale, Kansas, Yale and Ringling, Oklahoma, and attended high school in Browning, Missouri, where she graduated in 1935.

Harriett graduated from Parsons Junior College in 1937 and hegan her teaching career in Browning. Harriett taught in the elementary schools of Sedan, Winfield, and Kansas City, Kansas. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Pittsburg State University in 1942.

She married Gerald Frank Ridenour of Emporia, Master-Sergeant USMC, in Raleigh, N.C. on July 28, 1945. Following the war they moved to Council Grove. Harriett taught in Council Grove from 1953 until 1982 at Washington Elementary School, and received her Masters Degree from Emporia State in 1967.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald, Council Grove; a son, Craig Ridenour and his wife, Patty, Oklahoma City, Okla., and a daughter, Corlis Weeks and her husband, Cliff, McLouth, Kan. Her grandchildren include Travis Ridenour and his wife, Angelita, Kingfisher, Okla., Frauna Aber and her husband, Nick, Piedmont, Okla., Corissa Uphoff and her husband, Brian, Fontana, Kan., -and Cara Weeks, Topeka, Kan. Great-grandchildren are Xavier and Maverick Ridenour, Blake Ray, Heather Admire, Triston and Kaden Aber, Kyra and Kimball Uphoff, and a great-great granddaughter Athena Rose Admire.

Harriett was a member of the First Congregational Church and a 73-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, has belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, Talahi Club, Score and Four Club, and TPM Club while living in Council Grove.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 30, at Penwell-Gabel Flint Hills Chapel, with Pastor Christy Alexander officiating. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church or Morris County Hospital Foundation and may be mailed to Penwell-Gabel, Box 273, Council Grove KS 66846.
