Leland Loquist

Leland George Loquist, 75, Council Grove, Kan., passed away Sunday, August 23, 2009, at Via Christi Saint Francis Hospital in Wichita.

He was born to Rudolph G. and Inez E. Loquist March 4, 1934, at Burdick. He graduated from Council Grove High School and later graduated from Emporia State University with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration.

Leland served on active duty in the 542d Engineer Company of the United States Army during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge from the Army in September 1955 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

From 1963 to 1966, Leland served as the Undersheriff of Morris County, Kansas.

Leland was joined in marriage to his wife, Joann, on June 5, 1965. During their 44 years of marriage, they were blessed with three children: son, Eric; daughters, Melissa and Sarah.

Upon leaving law enforcement, Leland embarked upon a long career in banking. Leland worked for several years at the First National Bank in Wichita. He subsequently returned to Council Grove to work at the Farmers and Drovers Bank. He remained at the Farmers and Drovers Bank for nearly 37 years, serving as Vice-President and Cashier until his retirement in 2006.

Leland was active in the First Baptist Church in Council Grove and served as a Deacon for many years. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing but found his greatest joy in his family.

He was preceded in death by both parents and his sister, Leola Jane Fannin.

Leland is survived by his wife Joann of the home; son Eric and wife Sandy, Osage City; daughters Melissa and Sarah both of Wichita; sister JoAnne Sorenson, Olathe; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 28, at the First Baptist Church, in Council Grove, with interment following at Greenwood Cemetery.
