With nearly 80 members in attendance the 109th annual meeting of the Wabaunsee County Farm Bureau Association was held August 13th at Mission Valley High School. Ken Flagler, President of the Wabaunsee Co. Farm Bureau Assoc., welcomed members and special guests. Pastor John Austin from the Peace United Church of Christ, in Alma gave an invocation appropriate for an agricultural based crowd.

After being treated to a meal by local caterer, Barbara Hewes, members listened to Rob Sage, local Farm Bureau Financial Services Agent, about his trip to India. Rob traveled to India with the KARL program. He spoke of the differences between the population, pollution, and agriculture of the U.S.A. and India. He also presented many pictures of trip including the crazy traffic in India!

Leah Miller, Women's Chair, gave a year review of the county Farm Bureau board's activities including agricultural education and safety events like celebrating Food Check Out Week and hosting a stroke detection clinic. Wabaunsee Co. Farm Bureau has been well represented throughout the year with member, John Gehrt, serving as the Resolution Chairman for District #2 for the Kansas Farm Bureau. Your county Farm Bureau has supported many events and organizations through ~$2,000 in donations. Some of the events and organizations that benefited from the donations include the Wabaunsee Co. Sesquicentennial, the local chapter of the American Red Cross, the All American Beef Battalion, and the county food pantry.

Leah and Ken also presented Eric Frey and Erin Sage both a $500 check. Eric and Erin were chosen as the 2009 Wabaunsee Co. Farm Bureau scholarship recipients. Eric is the son of Mike and Donice Frey and is currently attending Kansas State University majoring in Agricultural Technology Management. Erin Sage is the daughter of Mary Anderson and Gail Sage. I have found out that there ain't no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.
