Gloria Smith elected president of Alta Vista Alumni Banquet

The Alta Vista Alumni Association gathered Saturday night, September 26, in the gym at Prairie Heights Middle School. There were 72 alumni and 36 teachers and guests present.

President Carolyn Haag Meares presided. Vice-president Norma Burnett led the group in prayer before the catered meal served by the Simpson United Methodist Church Saturday Circle. Following the meal, Secretary Karen Smith called the roll and read the minutes. The treasurer's report was given by Donald Zimmerman.

Election of officers was held. Officers for the year 2010 are president-Gloria Joy Smith; vice-president-Colleen Ramsour Anderson; secretary-Karen Brown Smith; and treasurer- 'Marilyn Roberts Ziegenhirt.

During the program the 50-year class of 1954 was honored along with the classes of 1934, 1939, 1944, 1949, 1959, 1964 and 1969.

A memorial service for the alumni who have passed away in the last year followed the program. Those honored were: Larry Andres-Class of 1955; Leon D. Swenson-1957; Virginia McLaughlin Zerbe-1925; Virginia Sizemore Frese-1928; Frances Healy Janke-1939; Vera Fry Deever-1940; Charlene Cessnum Hansen-1941; Hester Glessner Engstrom-1947; Donna Conwell Langvardt-1951; JoAnn Wieland Honn-1952; Darrell Kahle-1952; and Peter Charowhas-1959.

The school song, led by Shirley Barber Spittles, was sung and the meeting adjourned. Following the meeting, most of the group enjoyed the spectacular fireworks display sponsored by the Alta Vista Chamber of Commerce.
