CopyArea students earn honors at competition
Fifty-seven junior high students from nine schools in Rolette and Bottineau counties took part in the annual MATHCOUNTS competition held February 9 at Dakota College Bottineau.
This competition tests the math skills of these students. This test is taken by all junior high students throughout the United States schools.
This yearly event is sponsored by the North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers and Dwane Get-zlaff, County Superintendent of Schools. Bottineau and Rolette schools compete with regional schools from Ward, Renville and McHenry Counties to advance to the state competition held in Bismarck March 8.
A team of middle school Math-aletes from Bottineau Middle School and Mt. Pleasant School of Rolla won their county's MATHCOUNTS Team competition.
The top individual was Cody Bedlion from Bottineau and McK-ayla Gourneau from Turtle Mountain Community Middle School of Belcourt.
The second and third place teams are from Westhope Public School and Newburg United Public School, (Bottineau County) and Rolette Public School and TMCMS, Belcourt, for Rolette County-Ron Peterson, Bottineau, and Kathy Desjarlais. Belcourt, each received the top coaching awards for their student placing first in the county competition.
In our increasingly technological society, those students who do not begin developing strong problem-solving, logical thinking and analytical abilities in middle school will face an uphill battle later in life if they wish to pursue a medical, scientific, mathematical, engineering or technical career.
As a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students, MATH-COUNTS prepares students for future career opportunities and success. More than 7 million students across the U.S. have participated in the MATHCOUNTS program.
