Deadline approaches for board of higher ed applicants

Dr. Wayne G. Sanstead, chairman of the nominating committee for the State Board of Higher Education, has announced that the committee is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the State Board of Higher Education.

The two positions will become vacant July 1, 2010.

The committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. in the Office of the Chief Justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court on Monday, April 5, and will forward three nominations for each vacant position to Governor Ho-even.

Board members appointed by the governor must be confirmed by the 2011 North Dakota Senate.

The SBHE is the governing body for the North Dakota University System, which includes the state's 11 publicly supported colleges and universities. The board is comprised of seven members who serve four-year terms, one student member and one non-voting faculty advisor. The vacancies will be created when the terms of board members Sue Andrews, Mapleton and Duaine Espe-gard, Grand Forks expire June 30, 2010. Other current SBHE members are. Michael Haugen, Fargo; Jon Backes, Minot: Claus Lembke, Bismarck; Grant Shaft, Grand Forks; Richie Smith, Wahpeton; Rachelle Hadland, student member, NDSU and Jon Jackson, non-voting faculty advisor, UND.

In addition to Sanstead, who serves as chairman for the nominating committee, other members consist of the President Pro Tempore Senator Jerry Klein; Speaker of the House of Representatives David Monson, President of the North Dakota Education Association Dakota Draper, and Chief Justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court, Gerald W. VandeWalle.

Along with the application, applicants must also submit a background resume and supporting references. Applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on March 25, 2010.
