Sasha Golus' remarkable high school basketball career reached another milestone last week when she was named to the Class A girl's all-state team.

Golus, a junior on the Turtle Mountain Community High School team, earned the honor only a year after being named to the Class A girl's second-team.

A 5 foot-10-inch post player, Golus averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 49 percent from the field. Her efforts helped lead the Bravettes to a 17-5 record and a spot in a state qualifying game that the Bravettes eventually lost.

Both Golus' scoring and rebounding averages were the best in the West Region for the second consecutive season. So was her blocked shot average of 3.7 per game. In addition, Golus averaged just under three steals per game.

To put in perspecitve her accomplishment, other schools in the West Region inlude players from Minot, Dickinson, Mandan and Bismarck.

Her talent, and presence, are instrumental to a basketball program trying to compete with the top teams in the state.

"Sasha has a good, positive attitude, who's easy to coach and is somebody every coach wishes they had more like," said head basketball coach, DJ McGillis. "She's also a role model for anybody in our program because of her work ethic, both during the season and in the offseason. The other girls see how hard she works and look to her as a leader."

Golus will enter her senior year looking to add to her career scoring total of approximately 1,150 points. McGillis didn't know if her scoring total was nearing a record because of players who have transferred to Belcourt, but did say it is one of the highest totals.

"We had some players transfer in who have scored well over 1,000 points, but as for somebody who has player her entire career here, it has to be one of the highest point totals in school history," praised the coach.

McGillis indicated her playing career won't end with high school graduation next spring.

"All she has to do is develop a little more strength and the ability to move around the perimeter a little more and she'll fit into anybody's program," McGillis stated.
