In these times of ever-increasing daily living expenses and questionable investment payouts, there is one surefire investment that will put money back into your wallet.

According to Judy Martinson with Rolette County Public health, quitting tobacco is the best thing a tobacco user can do to save money and save their health.

"Quitting tobacco use is the best investment going right now. It will put money back in your pocket and will give you the best holiday gift for yourself - a healthier body," said Martinson. "Aperson who smokes a pack of cigarettes per day will save more than $ 1,200 in one year by quitting. With the chemicals in the tobacco and the secondhand smoke gone from their lives and homes, they may also realize some savings from decreased medical and dental costs for themselves and their family members."

"We're worried that the stress of current economic woes may be inducing people to smoke even more," said Martinson. "Therefore we want everyone to know that help is available and it's FREE. There is no cost to call the North Dakota Tobacco Quitline, and qualified callers who sign up for the service will even be able to get free nicotine patches, nicotine lozenges or nicotine gum to help them beat the nicotine cravings when they quit."

The Quitline offers individualized telephone counseling with a trained counselor who will be able to help people learn to deal with nicotine cravings and the stress of quitting.

Telephone counseling calls are conducted at times convenient for Quitline customers.

"We're definitely experiencing some trying economic times in our country," said Martinson. "Putting your health on the right track and saving the money normally spent on tobacco will certainly fatten your wallet and definitely help you start 2009 with a healthier life."

For help with quitting, tobacco users can call the Quitline at 1.800.QUIT.NOW or call Rolette County Public Health in Rolla at 477-5646.
