Wabaunsee County Clerk issues Intangibles Tax Clarification

Wabaunsee County Taxpayers may have recently received a postcard from the State of Kansas Department of Revenue regarding the Intangibles Tax. The yellow post card has caused a lot of confusion, especially to taxpayers who are not required to file it. In Wabaunsee County ONLY residents of Farmer Township and Maple Hill Township are required to file Intangibles Tax Form 200.

Intangibles tax is not a new tax. It is a local tax on gross earnings on savings accounts, stocks, bonds, accounts receivable and mortgages. Again, the only taxing entities in Wabaunsee County that collect Intangibles Tax are Farmer Township and Maple Hill Township.

The postcards were mailed by the State to notify taxpayers of the two following changes:

#1 - The Intangibles Tax Form 200 will no longer be provided in your Kansas Income tax booklet from the State

#2 - Those who are required to file an Intangibles Tax Form 200, must now file it with the County Clerk. Deadline is April 15th.

In the past, the State did nothing with the intangibles forms, except collect them and mail them back to the appropriate counties to be processed. This year, due to State budget cuts, the State was unable to hire the additional staff needed to process the intangibles forms. Thus, the reason for the change is that taxpayers are require to send the completed intangibles form directly to their respective County Clerk.

Your Kansas Income Tax Return is still filed in Topeka, either by mail or electronically. That part did not change.

If you need a blank Intangibles Tax Form 200, you may obtain one online at http://ksrevenue.org/formsint.htm or you may contact my office at 785-765-2421..

Your income tax preparer is aware of the changes. If you prepare your own taxes and are required to file the Intangibles Form 200, please mail it to Wabaunsee County Clerk, P.O. Box 278, Alma, KS 66401.

Thank you, Jennifer Savage
