Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom (KFAC) will again offer graduate-level summer courses through Kansas State University in 2010. KFAC summer graduate courses are designed to re-energize Kansas educators and introduce them to delivery methods and resource materials which can be used to incorporate agriculture into the curriculum. From investigating a flower's reproduction system to exploring the science behind a dairy farm, KFAC courses open up the door to the many exciting opportunities agriculture can provide to an educator. Scholarships provided by agriculture donors are available, which make these exceptional resources an affordable option for all Kansas educators.

Three courses are offered through KFAC's partnership with the Kansas State University graduate program: Connecting Your Classroom to Kansas Agriculture (3 credit hours), Plants Have a Place in the Classroom (1 credit hour), and What You Can Learn from a Tomato (1 credit hour).

Connecting Your Classroom to Kansas Agriculture is a week-long hands-on experience that assists teachers in integrating agriculture into all classroom subjects while aligning lessons with state curricular standards. Educators will participate in creating techniques that will allow their students to investigate the scientific process, practice daily observations, take data measurements and analyze results using agricultural examples. This course is offered in Manhattan, Kan., June 7 to 11,

Plants Have a Place in the Classroom introduces teachers to the possibility of mastering a school garden through information on a variety of plant-related topics, including soil science and plant growth and development. Experts in the horticulture field will enable educators to create an excitement about growing plants with students. This two-day course is offered in Wichita, Kan., June 14 and 15.

What You Can Learn from a Tomato is a food science course that focuses on the scientific aspects of food from harvesting to processing to consumption. Through the course, educators will learn to integrate food science lessons into their existing curricula through hands-on activities and lively discussions. This two-day course is offered in Kansas City, Mo., June 17 and 18.

All KFAC courses are offered through Kansas State University Division of Continuing Education, the College of Education and the College of Agriculture, and participants earn Kansas State University graduate credit. Each course is approved for continuing education hours required of teachers for license renewal and salary advancement.
