McFarland City Park Gets Substantial Upgrades

Members of the McFarland City Council gathered Thursday morning for a ribbon cutting ceremony as they celebrated the completion of an upgrade to their city park. McFarland has always been known for its beautiful and user-friendly park. Recently a $10,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Health, Environmental Waste Management Division, made it possible for the city to install new sidewalk barriers that are filled with six inches of tire mulch. This mulch is made from ground up tires that provide a soft and safe landing in the playground areas.

The grant was a 50/50 match project. Much of the share from the city was made possible by way of volunteer labor that completed the project. Mayor Perry Piper was excited to announce the completion of the project and provided a list of volunteers that pitched in and made the job possible. Those volunteers included: Tom Dillingham, Cliff Hund, Perry Piper, Joe Tornoden, Fred Beavers, Pastor Ron Rather, Terry McDaniel, Kyle Smith, Brady Smith, Denise McDaniel, Jacob Havenstein, Jason Shurle, Larry Senne, Jacob McDiffett and Brady Boeckman.

Kansas Department of Health Green Team Coordinator Sandra Barnett said the rubber material is readily available to be used in a variety of projects such as the playground enhancement.
