Flint Hills Legacy Conservation Area Meeting Well Attended

Back in November, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) held a meeting at the Alma Community Center to provide information and gather comments about the proposed Flint Hills Legacy Conservation Area (FHLCA) project; a project aimed at protecting the remaining tall-grass prairie, associated wildlife and the local ranching culture, with the purchase of conservation easements from willing sellers. Since that meeting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has written a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Land Protection Plan (LPP) for this project, which can be found at the following websites: : http://flinthills.fws.gov or http://www.fws.gov/mountain-prairie/planning. A meeting Friday night at the Alma Community Center, attended by 32 members of the public, was held to provide additional information about the FHLCA project and gather further comments about the project and the draft EA and LPP. Stipulations expected in the proposed easement contract and some still undetermined were discussed. The public comment period for this project will close May 15th, and the Service hopes to finalize the planning and approval process shortly thereafter, making the project eligible for funding through the Land and Water Conservation Fund in fiscal year 2012, which begins October, 2011.
