William Solon "Bill" Markley

Funeral services for William Solon "Bill" Markley, 78, rural Douglas County, were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Grace Evangelical Presbyterian Church, with Allen Markley officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Grove.

Mr. Markley died Friday, May 7, 2010, as he was clearing trees from a fence line on his property.

He was born February 17, 1932, in Lawrence, the son of Solon and Mildred Longanecker Markley. He attended Lawrence schools and graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1949. He later served two years in the United States Coast Guard in Mary Island, Alaska. He was a dairy farmer for many years in southwest Douglas County. He later worked for Kansas Power and Light, and retired in 1991.

He and his wife retired to Wabaunsee County in 1993, where he spent many years building authentic Conestoga wagons, which are now on display in museums and various historical sites. They moved back to Douglas County in 2009. He attended the Lone Star Church.

He married Marjorie Carrie Denewiler on Aug. 28, 1955. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Matthew and wife Sandra, Ulysses, and Martin and wife Rebecca, Lawrence; a daughter Jennifer Boyle and husband Greg, Missouri City, Texas; a sister, Mary Katherine Lynch and husband Howard, Lawrence; 10 grandchildren, Nathan and Tyler Mark-ley, Emma Sweat, Caroline, Benjamin, Hannah, and Drew Markley, and Zachary, Samuel, and Jonathon Boyle; and two great-grandchildren, Ella and Solon.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Manhattan Christian College, sent in care of the funeral home, 601 Ind., Lawrence, KS 66044.
