At the invitation of Governor Mark Parkinson, Jill Wenderott of Alma, Kansas, a senior at Wabaunsee High, was selected to attend the 27tn Annual Governor's Scholars Awards Program on May 2, 2010 in Topeka.

The recognition ceremony honors the top academic one percent of Kansas high school seniors. Scholars are selected from accredited public and private schools in the state. "These high school seniors have shown dedication in their studies and a commitment to learning. They've earned this honor and I want to congratulate all of them on this achievement," Governor Parkinson said. "We should also recognize their families, teachers, and mentors for helping these outstanding students achieve their academic goals."

This program is coordinated for the Governor by the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force. It is funded by donations from private sector businesses in Kansas. The Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force was formed 27 years ago to strengthen public confidence in education. The following organizations are members of the Task Force: American Association of University Women, Kansas Association of School Boards, Kansas Congress of Parents and Teachers, Kansas State Department of Education, Kansas-National Education Association, Kansas School Public Relations Association, Kansas High School Activities Association and United School Administrators of Kansas.

Jill Wenderott, has also been selected to receive a 2010 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. Sixty-eight Kansas students received the four-year scholarship. Each recipient will receive $1,500 for the 2010-2011 academic year.

In its 24th year, the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program is designed to promote student excellence and achievement and to recognize exceptionally able students who show promise of continued excellence. Scholarships are awarded by congressional district.

An advisory committee representing school administrators, representatives from higher education institutions, State Board of Education members, and business and industry leaders selected the scholarship recipients. This year, 264 graduating high school seniors, who met the scholarship requirements, submitted applications.

Jill is the daughter of Doug and Chris Wenderott of rural Alma.
