Alma Grade School First Grade Volunteers

This school year Mrs. Gronquist's first grade class has had several volunteers in their classroom. After her retirement as the resource room teacher at Alma Grade School last year, Mrs. Pam Stuewe began volunteering one afternoon a week during the current school year in the first grade classroom. Mrs. Stuewe helps students with many activities such as completing work, orally reads tests to students, or listens to students read. After visiting with Mrs. Gronquist, Cici Wood asked if she could also volunteer in the first grade in a similar capacity. Ms. Cici Wood is a student at Kansas State University. She wanted to learn more about the field of education. She also wanted to give to the community while working with children. Mrs. Gronquist and Cici Wood are both employees of Best Buy in Manhattan, KS. Cici has completed over 49 volunteer hours in the first grade classroom. As a result of her volunteer hours, Best Buy has awarded Alma Grade School a tag team award. The award is $1000.00 from Best Buy. The school has decided to utilize this money toward next year's school wide reading incentive program better known to parents as "red dot books/tests". The reading program is a yearlong process where students read a book and then take a test over what they read. Points are awarded for successful completion of each book. Students are awarded prizes as they reach each new level with a big celebration when they have met their goal. The first grade students have received a great deal of individualized attention this year and have greatly enjoyed the help they have received from these wonderful volunteers. So a very big thank you to Best Buy, Ms Cici Wood and Mrs. Pam Stuewe!!!!
