Congressman Moran visits Wamego Hospital

Although Pottawatomie County is not included in the "Big First" district of Kansas, United States Congressman Jerry Moran invited himself to tour the Wamego City Hospital Monday morning and visited with representatives about their issues and concerns.

Congressman Jerry Moran represents one of the largest congressional districts in the country. It is larger than 25 states and roughly the size of Illinois. The "Big First" covers more that 57,000 of Kansas' 82,277 square miles and is the 11th largest congressional district in the nation. The district consists of 69 counties located in central and western Kansas and is characterized by the small town values of hard work and community. But, Pottawatomie County, and the City of Wamego is not included in that district. That didn't keep Wamego City Hospital Staff members from welcoming him with open arms.

Congressman Moran recently introduced legislation that would support Kansas rural hospitals and help the patients they serve. The Enhanced Rural Health Care Extension Act of 2009 would extend funding for the Rural Community Hospital Program and allow Kansas hospitals to be considered for participation. This program, which was set to expire in November, helps small rural hospitals by providing them with enhanced Medicare reimbursement for inpatient services and other assistance.

The Wamego City Hospital Staff was clearly appreciative for his support.

"We asked for assistance, and Moran was the only one that stepped up and offered support," said Wamego City Hospital Interim CEO Shannon Flach.

"Kansas was not initially selected as one of the states to participate in the program. Several Kansas hospitals appear to meet all the necessary criteria to be considered for participation, and this bill would allow them that opportunity," said Moran.

Moran's visit at the Wamego City Hospital included viewing updates and new additions to the faculty as well as interaction with many members of the hospital staff.

Moran said his district includes more hospital facilities than any other congressional district in the nation. He added that he has attempted to visit many of those facilities to field questions and gather information. He continued by saying that much of that information has become even more important during the health care reform debate.

Moran, who serves as Chairman of the House Rural Health Care Coalition, said that communication is a key issue, and added that he always welcomes input from constituents.
