Nominations are currently being accepted by the Walsh County Farm Service Agency (FSA) from eligible farmers and land landowners who would like their name to be listed on the election ballot for this December's County Committee election.

FSA County Committees represent farmers in their local communities and make decisions on crop bases and yields, commodity loans, conservation programs, disaster payments and other federal farm assistance programs.

"It is very important that producers become involved in this local election process, " says Kristi Brintnell, FSA County Executive Director. "The positions available on the County Committees are the direct link between the voice of the farmer and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Their main purpose is to make certain that viewpoints and issues are understood and considered in decision making."

Nomination forms are available from the FSA office. Individuals may nominate themselves or another individual, but that person must also sign the nominating petition.

Nomination forms have to be returned to the county office by August 2, 2010. Election ballots will be mailed to eligible voters in late November and must be returned to FSA by December 6, 2010.

Elected members and alternates will take office January 1, 2011 for a three-year term.

For election purposes, the county is divided into three election districts. Each district holds an election once every three years.

This year, elections will be held in the townships of Kinloss, Silvesta, Tiber, Dewey, Adams, Vesta, Shepherd, Latona, Sauter, and Perth Townships. Dennis V. Skorheim, the current COC member for LAA 1, will not be running for re-election as he has served his term limit.

Minority and female farmers are strongly encouraged to take part in this important nomination process.

A COC election informational meeting will be held on June 16, July 7, and July 21 at 9:00 a.m. at the FSA Office in Park River for interested individuals. For more information on the County Committee election process, please contact the Walsh County FSA office at 701-284-7771 ext 2.
