Park River chiropractic clinic under new management

Purchased about a month ago, the chiropractic clinic in Park River, N.D., Sundby Family Chiropractic, is now Park River Chiropractic.

Dr. Jonathan Jelinek and his wife Kristy, owners of Grafton Chiropractic, which opened last January, have added Park River to their practice.

"I'm really glad to see it go to someone in the area," said former owner Jessica Sundby.

Sundby said that she opened the business in Park River in 2005 after getting out of school, but ended up moving to Alaska when an opportunity arose for her family.

The business reopened when she found Dr. Phillip Berg from East Grand Forks, who commuted to see clients in Park River. In June he announced that he would be leaving Sundby Family Chiropractic. He continues to practice in Grand Forks.

Sundby sold the business to the Jelineks who wanted to fill Park River's need.

Park River Chiropractic is currently open two half days a week.

"It's a bit of a trial period with the hours," said Kristy who added that they are interested in expanding the clinic hours, but they would need to hire help in order to operate both clinics full time.

Tuesdays from 1 to 6 p.m. and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon Kristy manages the clinic and appointments while Jonathan sees patients.

"We are seeing a range of patients--young and old, farmers and office workers," said Kristy.

The Jelineks came to the area to move closer to family and raise their two young boys aged 4 years and 20 months.

Jonathan graduated from the University of North Dakota and went to Bloomington, Minn. to attend chiropractic school. From there he moved back to Grand Forks to practice until he took an opportunity to practice in England.

Family, he said, was a big draw when they decided to move back to the area.

When the business opened in Grafton last January, Kristy said they were seeing around 10 patients a week and that number has since grown to 60 to 70 patients a week.

"We treat a lot of muscular skeletal injuries," said Jonathan.

He said that he treats a lot of neck, back, and joint pain issues using manipulation and he has treated issues from colicky babies to arthritis. Because every body is different, not everyone is treated the same way.

"I'm a very hands on doctor," Jonathan said of his treatment techniques. "If someone comes in who's 350 pounds and built of steel, you'd treat them differently than a baby."

Through his business, he is trying to promote wellness; emphasize posture, stretching and exercising; and offer a natural option for certain conditions. They do refer patients to physical therapists or medical doctors as needed.

He is currently using equipment from Sundby Family Chiropractic in the Park River office, but he is interested in getting newer equipment, expanding the hours, and getting another local doctor to assist with it all.

"There's a lot of potential in these small towns," Jonathan said. "This is finally home and I don't plan on leaving any time soon."
