An Eastern Oregon University sophomore majoring in ag business and a 2008 Weiser High School graduate, Colton Chandler landed a prizewinner when he fished in the 2009 Elliott Bay Salmon Derby this past July 18.

Not bad for his first try at ocean fishing.

The 28-pound wild salmon was good enough for second place at the derby held in the Puget Sound out of Seattle.

Chandler was a winner in more ways than the title. The placing earned him $2,000 and he got to bring home the big fish, making for some good eating for family and friends.

The Elliott Bay Derby is one of 14 in the Northwest Salmon Derby Series. The series is billed as a fishing promotion program directed by the Northwest Marine Trade Association.

The series began in February with the Roche Harbor Salmon Classic, and will conclude Sept. 12, at the Edmonds Coho Derby.

Chandler's grandfather, Wayne, apparently decided it was time to take his two grandsons, Colton and Spencer, on an ocean adventure. Never mind that grain harvest was just beginning. Their dad, Ernie, could handle that for a few days.

Chandler said he liked the new experience, and will likely do more of it in the future.

For now, though, he's started football practice at EOU, and will begin classes later this month.
