The Federal Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded the Cowlitz-Lewis Economic Development District, through the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Council of Governments, a $100,000 grant to begin a project to boost disaster resiliency by businesses throughout Cowlitz and Lewis counties.

The project is the first step to assist business owners throughout the region to provide economic resiliency and sustainability through disasters whether man-made or natural. It includes partnering with the chambers of commerce and the economic development councils to provide workshops and trainings to educate and prepare business owners for possible disruptions due to disasters. The grant will support consultation in disaster preparedness and the preparation of various forms for business owners' records.

The project is part of a series of measures to implement strategies in the 2007 Lewis County Flood Disaster Recovery Report completed by CLEDD in May 2009. Other potential projects include providing one-on-one consultation and assistance to business owners to complete resiliency templates and developing an economic "first responders" program for businesses which have been disrupted by disaster.
