The powerful windstorm that pounded the lower Columbia River region early Sunday morning knocked down its share of trees and utility lines.

The National Weather Service reported gusts of 58 miles per hour recorded at Astoria.

About a half dozen houses in Skamokawa, Grays River and the Elochoman Valley had trees or powerlines fall on them, according the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office.

Falling trees blocked SR 4 and some county roads until crews or volunteers cleared them away.

"The number of trees down that we dealt with on county roads was relatively light," county Public Works Director Pete Ringen said Monday.

"We were lucky. We still have a few days of roadside clean up to do, but nothing major."

A float house on Welcome Slough was knocked off its mooring, but electric lines held it in place.

At the Elochoman Slough Marina, the wind freed one boat of its moorings and pushed it into Elochoman Slough. The current from the slough pushed it toward the Columbia, and the Columbia's current pushed it back, driving the boat aground on the Hunting Island beach, where it was tied up until the owner could bring it back into the marina.
