Services Held in for Irene Lovaas

Irene Lovaas, age 87 of Hendricks, MN passed away Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the Hendricks Nursing Home.

Services were held Friday, August 20, 2010 at Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks with Pastor Duane Baun officiating. Burial was at the Bethlehem Cemetery in rural Astoria.

Memorials are preferred to Concordia College.

Irene was born on August 10, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to parents Helvor and Hanna (Ostensen) Oppedal. She was baptized and confirmed in the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church. She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis in 1944 as Salu-tatorian. She attended night school for three years at the University of Minnesota and in 1946 she graduated from Minnesota School of Business with an Executive Secretarial Diploma. Irene also worked four years for the Royal Norwegian Consulate in Minneapolis where she received a diploma from the King of Norway for doing work for the Norwegian government.

Irene was united in marriage to Rev. Archie Lovaas on April 4, 1951 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN. Together they moved from parish to parish from 1951 to 1980. They served the Wilmot Lutheran Church in Wilmot, SD from 1970-1977.

In June of 1968 she received her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and Special Education majors and in June of 1969 she received her Masters Degree in Learning Disabilities

from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. She taught first grade in Hosmer, SD then taught Chapter One in Milbank, SD and Roslyn, SD. She also taught Special Ed at Spencer, SD and then taught Jr. and Sr. High Special Education for one year at Salem McCook Central. Irene retired in June of 1990.

Irene enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading and traveling to Norway.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and studied and read the Bible faithfully and often contributed greatly to the Bible study at the Nursing Home.

Grateful for having shared her life are a few cousins, some in Norway; relatives and a host of friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Helvor and Hanna and her husband, Rev. Archie Lovaas.

The Birk Funeral Home of Canby, MN was in charge of arrangements for Irene Lovas.
