Trego County, Kansas, intends to make improvements to the public road and bridge system. Improvements will consist of constructing a new bridge. The existing bridge is located 4.0 miles South and 3.6 miles East of WaKeeney over Big Creek. The existing bridge has a very low sufficiency rating, a narrow roadway width, load limit restrictions, is on an unsafe curvy road, and is overtopped from flooding several times per year. The existing bridge will be abandoned and left in place. The new bridge will be constructed to the south of the existing bridge and will enhance safety by providing a wider roadway, flatter shoulder slopes, wider ditches, safety bridge rail, approach and exit guardrail, and a straighter roadway alignment taking into consideration that the bridge must cross Big Creek. The project will involve approximately five acres located in the 100 year floodplain. This project is needed to allow the County to meet the needs of the community for safe transportation. Therefore, there is not a practical alternative to the proposed project. The proposed project is designed to minimize adverse impacts and preserve the natural floodplain. Failure to provide these improvements would result in the County not meeting the community's need for safe transportation. A more detailed description of the project is available for citizen review by contacting the Trego County Public Works office at 120 S. Main, WaKeeney, KS 67672 or call (785) 743-2251. Honorable Dean L. Papes Chairman, Trego County Commission
