The TCHS physics class tested their engineering and design skills by racing cardboard boats at the WaKeeney swimming pool on August 25.

On the first day of school, the class was given the challenge of designing and building boats made of only cardboard and tape to carry at least one person. They immediately took to the task and did a tremendous job of working together, thinking critically, and taking on the challenge.

On Tuesday, despite threatening skies, the class put their crafts to the test to see who could get the most trips back and forth at the local pool before going down with the ship. Everyone did a great job, but the design of Reubin Sherwood, James Schreiner and Curtis Satran was the most successful. Built for buoyancy, the craft was tough to move through the water, but could support five people.

The group of Victoria Gano, Kirsten Locke and Brandon Katt was also highly successful, making several trips before sinking. The group of Dona Diec, Steven Anderson and Jon Scherr built a craft that was highly buoyant, but it struggfed with stability issues in the water.

Ail in all the class did a great job and had a lot of fun. After the race, students were given the opportunity to enjoy a free swim.

The physics class would like to thank the city of WaKeeney and Mrs. Flax for letting us use the pool and all the parents, students and teachers who came to watch and make the regatta a success.
