Those interested in the future of public instruction in Arizona are welcome to attend a debate by candidates for state superintendent of public instruction on Thursday, May 13.

The debate will be held at the West Sedona School, 570 Posse Ground Road, Sedona. There will be a meet and greet at 6:30 p.m., followed by the debate at 7 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Arizona School Board Association.

Attending the debate will be candidates Republican Margaret Dugan; Democrat Penny Kotterman; Republican John Huppenthal; and Democrat Jason Williams. Serving as moderator for the evening will be Tim Carter, Yavapai County school superintendent.

This debate will help voters learn what ideas the candidates have for the future of education in our state and how to improve public education. Topics could include funding of public schools, linking teacher compensation to student performance, how Arizona should handle a possible national common core of state standards and continued use of the current Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards as a requirement for high school graduation.

Voters are urged to bring their questions for the candidates. For more information about the debate, contact Karen McClelland, Yavapai County director for the Arizona School Board Association, at 284-0001.
