Arizona taxpayers receive a state tax credit for cash contributions made to charities that provide help to the working poor.

Food banks in the Verde Valley qualify. So do other food-providing organizations and charities that serve the working poor. All need their fellow residents' generous support at this time of year, according to a press release.

The numbers of individuals and families turning to local food banks and other food programs is increasing. In 2007,.5,654 of our neighbors - or 8 percent of the valley population - went to a food bank for assistance; in 2008 the number, increased to 8,737

- 12 percent of the population

- a 50 percent increase.

It's easy to give through the Arizona Tax Credit Program. Give, and receive a tax credit in return. Married couples can give up to $400. Single persons can give up to $200. Gifts must be given by Thursday, Dec. 31, and donors should check with financial advisors to be sure that they qualify.

The Verde Food Council urges everyone to demonstrate their concern by supporting the food bank of their choice. Giving is easy. Go to verdefood.org and give through PayPal to:

The Sedona Community Food Bank

The Central Arizona Food Bank, in Cottonwood

The Adventist Community Services Food Bank, in Camp Verde

The Beaver Creek Food Program, in Rimrock.

Donors' gifts goes directly to the food bank of their choice.

Food banks and other programs that serve our neighbors with needs are hurting. The stress on volunteers, programs and financial resources is growing. The answer lies within each of us.
