Shell, Hyattville and Frannie precincts topped 60 percent

The final numbers won't be available for several weeks, but it appears that voter turnout was good for Aug. 17 primary election in Big Horn County.

A total of 4,017 ballots were cast in the election, which featured spirited races for the GOP nomina-tions in the races for key state and country offices. With 5,330 registered voters on the county's books heading into the election, the turnout comes in at 72 percent.

Clerk Dori Noyes said the election went smoothly across the county, but unlike past years, she was unable to produce the postelection number of total registered voters for each precinct. As of Tuesday, Aug. 30, her office was still

processing the registrations of the new voters who went to the polls.

Using the pre-election registered voter counts, though, one can conclude that Cowley had the highest turnout, with 81 percent of registered voters casting ballots in the election. Basin and Manderson, each with 77 percent turnout, rounded out theitop three.

The lowest turnouts were reported in Otto (66 percent), Lovell and Byron (each at 69 percent).

With 71 percent turnout countywide, the primary ranks behind only the primary election of 2002, when 75 percent of county voters went to the poll. In 2006 the last time county department heads and the key state offices were on the primary ballot the turnout was 71 percent.
