Superior Court Judge William Carpenter assumes national leadership role
Delaware Superior Court Judge William C. Carpenter Jr. was elected vice chairman of the National Conference of State Trial Judges. The election was during the annual meeting of the American Bar Association in August, in San Francisco, Calif.
The conference, which is part of the American Bar Association Judicial Division, is the oldest, largest and most prestigious organization in the world representing the interests of state trial judges. This past year marked the organization's 50th anniver- sary.
Carpenter is expected to become chairman of the National Conference of State Trial Judges in August 2012. In addition, he will also serve as co-chairman of the Judicial Division Membership Committee, which serves nearly 4,000 judicial members.
Then-Gov. Tom Carper appointed Carpenter to Superior Court in 1993, and then-Gov. Ruth Ann Minner reappointed him to the court in 2005.
He is a graduate of the University of Delaware and Widener University School of Law. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Carpenter served as the U.S. attorney for the District of Delaware.
He has served as the chairman of the Delaware Sentencing Accountability Commission since 2003.
