Juan R. Ortega, "Sugar", 73, passed away at his home in Superior on Monday, Dec. 28, 2009. He was born in Steins, Jan. 26, 1936, and went to work in copper mining at the age of 16. Juan joined the U.S. Army in 1957 and served until 1960. He returned to copper mining and then, after many years of working as a copper miner, he retired, having helped support numerous family members.

Survived by his wife, Lupe S, Mr. Ortega has three daughters: Beatrice Marie (Chet) Christmas, Eva Marie, and Rosemary. There are five living brothers: Jose Rafael (Isabel) Ortega, Julio (Lupe), Manuel (Erestina), Carlos, and Mike. His sisters include Euvangelina (Victor) Ortega and Virginia (Rudy) Miranda. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

The Rosary service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 8, with the Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Graveside services will be held Saturday, Jan. 9 at 11 a.m. in Fairview Cemetery.

Superior Funeral Home assisted the family.
