The new school year means many changes for students at local schools. At Northwood-Kensett that also meant someone new will be greeting them from the nurse's office.

That someone is Susan Nelson, who began as the district's new nurse this year.

Nelson lives in rural Northwood, in the Martintown area, with her husband, Brian, and their 10-year-od son, Brock, who is in the fourth grade. Nelson also has a stepdaughter, Ashley, who is in the Navy.

Nelson is a graduate of Northwood-Kensett High School, with a degree in nursing from NIACC.

Nelson worked at Mercy clinics in Mason City for 16 years, at the West Campus and in skilled nursing.

In 2002, Nelson began as a nurse at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

She currently works part time at Northwood Pines Assisted Living, helping make sure the staff knows how to meet the residents' medical needs.

What brought Nelson to N-K was the chance for a change of pace. Her new duties should provide at least a younger group of patients to work with.

As school nurse, Nelson will serve the medical needs of students and staff at both the elementary and secondary buildings.

In her first few days, Nelson has mostly been getting acquainted with the buildings and the resources available to her as the school district's nurse. She has also seen a few students who have come to her after falling on the playground, and who have had scrapes or are suffering with colds.

As the school year progresses, and the cold and flu seasons arrive in full force, Nelson plans to help the students learn more about cold and flu dangers, and how to prevent spreading the illnesses, such as washing of hands.

For students who may have been injured or fallen ill, and who need the comfort and treatment of the school nurse, Nelson's welcoming and sympathetic smile, and qualified response, will no doubt prove to be a welcome sight when they need her
